When Vijay Sethupathi's character, the Bold Kannan, arrived in malaysia, he swept away the remnants of his indian background. In front of his lover Kalpana (Divya Pillai), he encounters Arivu (Yogi Babu), a ragpicker dressed as a businessman, at the airport while sporting an enigmatic smile.  Arivu hires Bold Kannan as his helper, assuming that Kannan is a laborer.

He meets Rukku (Rukmini Vasanth), who must reclaim her parents' home from abuser raja Durai (Babloo Prithviraj) while working odd jobs.  After losing in a gambling session to loan shark Dharma (BS Avinash), Kannan and Arivu end up in jail. However, Kannan then plans a larger theft, putting the motley crew on the run.

We are given several different versions of Vijay Sethupathi's name and backstory in the two and a half-hour-long movie.  Kannan tells Arivu that he used to steal bolts from cars where fights break out and sell them for cash, which is how he obtained the nickname "Bolt." He is "Bold" Kannan to Kalpana because he has the guts to confront the wrongdoings in his environment, and he is once again "Bolt" to Rukku because his father was fascinated by bolts, which are in between thunder and lightning.

Do all of these explanations seem strange, and more significantly, are they unrelated, arbitrary, and out of context to the story you read a few lines ago?  If so, you're going to see more of these throughout the film.

Ace is a multi-genre film that is entirely set in malaysia and has humor, crime, action, and all the standard commercial elements.  A sidekick falls into danger (thanks to the hero), a woman in distress, two villains with extra power through both judicial and extrajudicial means, and the hero himself, who becomes the master of all trades, steps in and rescues the day.  Ace is a film that can be a little too long and stretchy because of this combination of factors, which prevents it from addressing its issue in a straightforward manner.

Ace is anticipated to be a genre that focuses more on the high and unpredictable nature of card games, as the term implies.  We receive a piece of it, which is rushed and leaves you feeling lost if you don't know the game.  Ace quickly implements a second plot, which is a bank heist and the dutiful follow-up to a standard commercial template, when you want the movie to go deeper into it and shape it as essence.

Even though the movie discusses topics like power dynamics, sexual harassment, and the hard work of the working class, it seems like Ace tried to take on more than it could handle and found it difficult to tie these threads together.

Vijay Sethupathi always gambles with new directors giving them chances and it mostly ends in a dud and this is no exception!

Overall, watch it on OTT!
