An air india flight caught fire as soon as it landed at Delhi's indira gandhi International airport on tuesday (22 July 2025). According to a statement issued by the airport Authority, after landing in the air india flight (AI 315) coming from hong kong to delhi, a small engine (APU - Auxiliary Power Unit) installed in the rear of the plane caught fire.
All passengers and crew safe
This incident happened when the plane was standing at the gate after landing safely at delhi airport and the passengers had started disembarking from the plane. All passengers and crew are safe in this accident.
The auxiliary power unit is a small engine that performs functions like power supply and air conditioning while the plane is parked. It does not work like the main engine during flight, but it is necessary during the preparation and parking of the aircraft.
Air india issued a statement saying, "The fire has caused some damage to the aircraft, but the passengers and crew members have disembarked by then and all are safe. The aircraft has been stopped for further investigation and the regulator has been informed."
This incident has happened at a time when the Ministry of Civil Aviation told the rajya sabha on monday (July 21, 2025) that a total of 9 show cause notices were issued to air india for five safety violations in the last 6 months.
An air india plane (Boeing 787-8) from ahmedabad to london crashed shortly after takeoff last month, killing 260 people. After this horrific accident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered additional investigation of the airline's Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft.
Civil Aviation minister K. ram mohan Naidu said in the rajya sabha, "Out of a total of 33 aircraft, 31 operational aircraft have been inspected, of which minor defects were found in eight. These aircraft have been allowed to operate again after repairs."
