Galgotias university Clarifies Robo Dog Controversy at AI Summit
Galgotias university issued a clarification regarding the robot display at the ongoing india AI Impact Summit held at Bharat Mandapam.
The controversy arose after a university representative, professor Neha Singh, showcased a robotic dog named "Orion," claiming it was developed by the university's Center of Excellence.
Social media viewers later alleged that the robot was actually a Unitary Go2, manufactured by China’s Unitary Robotics, sparking widespread debate and criticism.
In an official statement, the Registrar of Galgotias university said:
“We sincerely apologize for the confusion that arose at the AI Summit.”
The representative was unaware of the robot’s technical origins and provided factually incorrect information in excitement while on camera.
She was not authorized to speak to the press, and the university acknowledged the organizers’ concerns by vacating the pavilion.
The controversy continued for a second day when another university representative claimed a soccer drone was developed at the university, which social media users traced to South Korea.
Professor Neha Singh accepted responsibility, explaining, “In my excitement, I may not have explained things clearly. The branding on the robot dog is already written on the surface, so we cannot claim to have created it. We are a responsible institution.”
Political reactions followed:
Congress criticized the incident on Twitter, saying it “disgraced the country in AI” by presenting a Chinese robot as Indian-made.
Opposition leader Rahul gandhi described the summit display as a “disorganized PR exercise” instead of promoting domestic talent and innovation.
Government officials also responded:
IT Secretary Krishnan stated that exhibitors displaying others’ products as their own would not be tolerated.
Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and IT, clarified that the intent is not to stifle innovation but to prevent misleading claims.
Union minister Ashwini Vaishnav mentioned that while many excellent AI solutions were showcased, immediate action was taken where mistakes occurred, and other genuine innovations should be recognized.
The university emphasized that the incident was due to misunderstanding and excitement, and reiterated their commitment to responsible innovation and accurate representation in technological exhibitions.
Galgotias university expressed regret over the confusion caused and assured the public that they uphold ethical and academic standards in all their research and displays.
