Most viewers walked out of OBSESSION believing they had witnessed a twisted love story with a bittersweet ending. But according to director Curry Barker, the film's final moments may actually be the most horrifying part of the entire movie.
At first glance, Bear gets exactly what he wants. His wish comes true. Nikki becomes completely obsessed with him, willing to do anything for him, no matter the cost. On the surface, it looks like an extreme, supernatural version of devotion. The fantasy appears fulfilled.
But that's where the nightmare really begins.
During a post-screening Q&A, Barker revealed a devastating detail that completely changes how the film should be viewed. The Nikki carrying out horrific acts throughout the story isn't truly Nikki anymore. What audiences are seeing is essentially a supernatural shell created by the wish itself.
The real Nikki is still there.
She's trapped inside her own body.
She's conscious.
And she's forced to watch everything unfold without any ability to stop it.
Every murder. Every act of violence. Every horrifying decision. She experiences it all as a helpless passenger imprisoned within herself.
Barker described her existence as a kind of purgatory. More importantly, he made it clear that it isn't a temporary state, and it certainly isn't merciful. Those brief moments when Nikki seems to break through the spell and desperately begs Bear to kill her suddenly become some of the film's most tragic scenes. They're not random interruptions. They're cries for freedom from someone who fully understands the horror of her situation.
And that leads to the film's most brutal revelation.
The only way to break a wish is for the person who made it to die.
Bear eventually understands that the real Nikki is suffering. He knows she's trapped. He knows she's begging for release. Yet he chooses to remain with the version of Nikki created by his wish.
That's why OBSESSION doesn't end with love winning.
It ends with a stolen life, a shattered identity, and a woman finally escaping purgatory only to inherit the consequences of choices she never made.
The wish came true.
The tragedy is that it came true for everyone except Nikki.
