china is going forward with a new law that restricts children under the age of 18 from playing online video games for more than three hours each week.

As announced by The People's Daily, an official newspaper for the Chinese Communist party, on one of the popular social media apps Weibo, anyone under the age of 18 will be prohibited from playing more than an hour of online video games on Friday, Saturday, sunday and public holidays. This hour of playing will be restricted from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. local game developers and publishers have been instructed to implement measures to ensure children don't play outside of the specified time zone. These same companies will also be routinely inspected to ensure that they are complying with the new law.

Publishers are allegedly considering adopting face recognition software, which may prevent younger players from playing. Players will now be required to register an account using their actual identity to access a specific title on the internet. Tencent, the Chinese gaming powerhouse, said in July 2021 that facial recognition software will be available in china for several of its titles.

For some years, china has been working to limit the amount of time its youth spend gaming. The Chinese Communist party passed a regulation in 2019 restricting children to 90 minutes of video gameplay per day till 10 p.m. This most recent item of legislation is only a continuation of long-standing practice.

The Chinese Communist party has yet to say when these new limitations would go into effect.
