Jallikattu: To control the bulls, brave guys went into the arena...

Pongal Tradition: Today is pongal in tamil Nadu, and the game involves controlling a bull by sitting on its back for as long as you can.

Jallikattu: history and significance

To save native, pure-bred bulls, farmers have traditionally adopted a technique called jallikattu. According to legend, jallikattu first appeared in tamil during the tamil classical period, which spanned from 400 to 100 BCE. An Indus Valley Civilization practise seal can be found in the National Museum of New Delhi. A cave painting near madurai that shows a lone man attempting to manage a bull is thought to be 1,500 years old or older.

Bulls are also trained

The tough sport of jallikattu is also known as "Eru Thazhuvuthal" and "Manjuvirattu." Additionally, bulls are trained to hone their skills by digging their horns into the soggy ground during the procedure known as "Man Kutuhal." When someone tries to hold the bulls back, they start to attack. In accordance with this custom, people spread the word that bulls should be saved because they are typically utilised for agricultural and meat production as cow breeding becomes more and more artificial. Farmers are urged by Jallikattu to protect their local breed of bulls.

Jallikattu will be played from today till 17 january 2023
