How can one become a judge?
There are two ways to become a judge in a
court in India. The first is that after completing the study of law, the
degree holder has to practice as a
lawyer for at least three years. After three years of advocacy, the
degree holder becomes eligible to appear for the Judicial
service Examination. After passing this examination, one is appointed as
district Judicial Magistrate. After at least three years of experience, a person becomes eligible to become a
district Judge. As experience increases, one can also apply for a judge in the
high court and
supreme Court. However, here the appointment is done through the Collegium.
How long does it take for a
lawyer to become a judge?
The appointment of Chief Justices and Judges in the High Courts of different states is done under Article 217 (1) of the Constitution. According to this, only a person who is a citizen of
india and has practised as an advocate in the
high court for at least 10 years will be eligible for appointment as a judge. However, his appointment is also done under the Collegium system. At the same time, to become a judge of the
supreme court, one should have experience of working as a judge in the
high court for at least five years, apart from this, a
lawyer who has practised in the
high court for 10 years also becomes eligible for this.
