Nicolas Cage, an Academy Award winner and compelling method actor, is known for doing challenging parts. Cage has demonstrated that his abilities span a wide range of genres, from tragedies and horror movies to action thrillers and superhero blockbusters. Surprisingly, up until his part in The Old Way, the acclaimed actor had never attempted a western. Brett Donowho's film, which stars Nicolas Cage as a vengeful gunslinger called out of retirement to find his wife's killers, was directed by Carl W. Lucas. Although Donowho's western story follows a formula, there are many laughs and grins to be had all throughout this well-known tale.

Colton Briggs, played by Nic Cage, is a notorious and cold-blooded gunfighter with a reputation for being more intelligent than his adversaries and accomplishing goals by any means necessary. When he meets Ruth (Kerry Knuppe), all of that changes. They get married and have a daughter, the brave and young Brooke (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). Briggs travels across town with Brooke to find his wife's killers when his past returns to haunt him in the shape of a massive retribution plan. As they reestablish their relationship as father and daughter, they come to know one another better while exchanging stories about Ruth that will give them the courage to go on.

The Old Way is a compelling American western that combines a well-known revenge story with a touching father-daughter adventure. Lucas' screenplay delivers an intriguing interaction between Colton and his daughter that grounds his story in compassion while eschewing clichés from the genre. Similar to many westerns, james McAllister's (Noah Le Gros) retribution mission has an affect on all of the primary characters in a variety of ways. However, the script skillfully strikes a balance between the various viewpoints and gives these characters the chance to evolve from the stereotypical "kill or be killed" characters to those who are concerned about their families and well-being.

In summary, Donowho's conventional and straightforward American western flick doesn't provide much in the way of surprises. However, The Old Way has some humorous moments and poignant scenes between a father and daughter as they mend their bond while on a quest of vengeance. This well-known story is brought to life in a fascinating way by Nicolas Cage and Ryan Kiera Armstrong's excellent performances. But the route there involves moments that can warm even the coldest of hearts. And as expected, two hearts become one in their battle for the same intended outcome.
