Grace (Jena Malone), an optometrist who identifies as an atheist, is the subject of the movie. Her brother chose religion over science and logic to become a priest in a Scottish convent, but she prefers the latter. Grace feels driven to look into her brother's apparent suicide because of her scepticism and disturbing visions, but the nuns' chilly and cult-like demeanour prevents her from doing so. Evasiveness and mistrust are used as coping mechanisms, but Grace will discover that something incredibly wicked is at play.

Malone is an actress who has eschewed fads in favour of more modest, intriguing roles that test her rather than catapult her to super stardom. Her career seemed to be set after she appeared in blockbusters like Sucker Punch and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but a few years later, she's back with a little-known film. Without losing sight of Grace's individual path, Consecration does enough to support its damning message about the Church.

In a performance that asks her to be a traditional woman caught in a perverse game, a sceptic, a detective, and a vulnerable sister, Malone is fearless and effective as the lead. Malone delivers a strong and fascinating performance that holds audiences' attention for the duration of the over two-hour length despite her weak accent, which is surprising given how well-received she was for her accent in Pride & Prejudice.

The movie is intriguing, intricate, and incredibly frightening on paper. The technical execution, however, needs improvement. There are a few effective scares, but Smith can't completely capture the story's fear beyond the bleak and eerie photography of Rob Hart and Shaun Mone. The strategies used are a little too simple for a plot this big. Thought and concern surrounding Grace's travel are well captured by a handful of Smith's camera methods. There is some evidence that Smith is alluding to classic horror movies, but that rarely makes the movie better and is only an intriguing fact.

The movie can get by with an eerie atmosphere and a superb lead performance until it collapses under the weight of expectations. Consecration is not a waste of time for fans looking for a fresh scare, but it doesn't stand out among other horror films with a religious theme.
