The Kollywood circuit has seen many famous directors contributing a lot for south cinema and some of them showed their strength even in north. Two men like that are Shankar and Mani Ratnam. But in the last few years, Mani has gone down a lot whereas Shankar has risen above all. This rise of Shankar and fall of Mani Ratnam has few reasons.
Commercially, Shankar’s previous films like ‘Sivaji’ ‘Robo’ have done extremely well at the box office whereas Mani Ratnam has been falling short at entertaining audiences with films like ‘Yuva’ ‘Raavan’ ‘Kadali’. The difference is, Shankar knows the mass pulse and has a larger than life grandeur to his films.
Mani is still conventional and though he has good grip over the technical aspects he has not been good at controlling the budget and at the same he is not able to develop the much needed entertainment aspect for the audience. Most of his films these days are coming with less depth and energy. Shankar on the other hand has got energy, glamour and fast pace.
