In his most recent film, Gigi & Nate, director Nick Hamm explores how human will and perseverance can transform desperation and sorrow into hope and joy. Nate Gibson must adjust to life as a quadriplegic after an unintentional dip into a lake forces him to succumb to an almost deadly sickness. The formerly gregarious and exuberant Nate finds it nearly impossible to adjust to this new way of life. Nate's service animal Gigi, a perceptive and inquisitive capuchin monkey, soon comes into his life, though, and when all seems lost, she gives Nate hope. A gang of animal rights activists wants to break their link by permanently separating them just when things appear to be improving and hope is once again embraced by Nate.

The first act of Gigi & Nate is a true demonstration of humanism and family in the face of sorrow. After Nate's unfortunate tragedy, the focus of the story shifts to an anticipated change in human behaviour and family dynamics. The first act does, in fact, provide a powerful glimpse into how a catastrophe can alter a person's will to live and the consequent impact on family members. However, there are several issues with how the story develops. Nate's daily activities are adequately shown on a regular basis, however it's difficult to grasp what's going on with him other his physical limitations. In essence, not enough time is spent exploring Nate's personality, but Hamm does just enough for viewers to draw their own conclusions about his mindset.

The movie has an underlying struggle that can prevent viewers from feeling an emotional connection to it. For instance, the pacing might be considerably better. Time leaps occur abruptly and at times when the tale feels unfinished. Furthermore, issues are solved as rapidly as they arise, which seems incredibly ridiculous in a movie like this. The story shifts from a straightforward and endearing one about coping with an unexpected tragedy and how it affects family dynamics to one about real-life controversies, which only serves to make problems worse. Hamm may have wanted Gigi & Nate to be a heartfelt tale of human will, but the way it is executed doesn't play to its advantages.
