The Inspection is a feature film that Elegance Bratton wrote and directed. It is based on Bratton's personal childhood and the turbulent connection he had with his mother. The drama has a standout performance from Jeremy Pope, who puts his character's heart on display and maintains his composure in the face of trolls. The Inspection features a few moving scenes, but lack of reflection, strong character development, and examination of the existing systems prevent the movie from living up to its full potential.

Young and gay Black man named Ellis French (Pope) has been living on the streets for a while. He is unable to return home since his mother, Inez (a wonderful Gabrielle Union), has disowned him because she cannot accept his sexual orientation. When Ellis returns to pick up his birth certificate to enlist in the Marine Corps, she treats him harshly in the hopes that Ellis' sexual orientation would change during his time in the military. Ellis struggles at boot camp. Ellis is hazed by cruel training manager Leland Laws (Bokeem Woodbine) after it is learned that he is gay. He gets mistreated by many of his other recruits as well. Ellis must put up with the horrible treatment he receives despite wanting to graduate.

With Pope's acting, it's simple to get sucked into the story, which is obviously very personal. The tenderness and nuance with which he confronts Ellis, his expressive eyes, and his need for acceptance and connection are profound, sweet, and sympathetic. The Inspection is eventually kept alive by Pope's performance and Ellis' difficult relationship with his mother. The movie has so much potential, but it falls short of realising it because it puts Ellis at a distance from everything else. There is very little development in his interactions with other characters, especially those he defends and fears.

When the movie focuses on Ellis' relationship with his mother, it excels. It would be an understatement to suggest that Inez harbours hatred in her heart. Ellis has a good word for every nasty one. He fights her off at every opportunity, demonstrating his fortitude and hope that their relationship would one day improve. Union's performance, despite having limited screen time, is impressive and compelling during their last stand-off. The film could have been so much more, but she and Pope are its standout characters.
