There is a widespread perception in indian tinsel cities that telugu movies are overstuffed with masala while malayalam movies are rich on content. For the same reason, telugu producers occasionally purchase the remake rights of malayalam films and import them to this country. But it appears that these remakes will only succeed if they are given a masala makeover.

The telugu remake of the malayalam film Kappela, "Butta Bomma," debuted in theatres last week. The movie hasn't generated as much buzz as some of its rivals. This is due to the fact that the creators stayed authentic to the original while failing to emotionally connect the audience to the characters. Even Sudheer Babu's "Hunt," a recent remake of the malayalam movie mumbai Police, hasn't been successful. Megastar's Godfather, a reworking of Lucifer, hasn't had much success in the past despite certain alterations.

No contemporary malayalam remake has succeeded in telugu outside Pawan Kalyan's "Bheemla Nayak," a remake of Ayyapanum Koshiyum. This is due to the fact that filmmaker Trivikram's excellent writing has significantly masala-fied the film Bheemla. Because of this, tollywood should focus more on the script rather than producing films that are blatant imitations of the original malayalam movies. If not, the outcome won't be favourable.
