Why US sending Abrams tanks to the Ukraine?

As the one-year anniversary of Vladimir Putin's invasion approaches, the US has promised to send 31 of its M1 Abram battle tanks to ukraine to aid the resistance in repelling the Russian assault. These tanks are estimated to be worth $400 million.

The move by Joe Biden's administration, according to Anatoly Antonov, Russia's ambassador to the US, amounts to "another obvious provocation" against Moscow. He promised that the tanks would be destroyed and warned the West that it would rue its "delusion" that ukraine could ever win the day.

Since then, Russian state television has made it a point to ridicule the Abrams as "battered" and prone to getting stuck in a segment downplaying the threat the new weapons in Kyiv's arsenal offer.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of ukraine, has stated that he thinks tanks are essential to restocking his country's military equipment in advance of what he claims will be stronger Russian offences in the spring, with fierce fighting already being witnessed in eastern ukraine for weeks.

Additionally, Kyiv wants them to support its efforts to retake land that Moscow's forces had early in the conflict. Following Germany's decision to provide Leopard 2 models in response to Mr. Zelensky's request for tanks after some hesitation, Poland, Canada, Norway, and spain now appear poised to follow suit.
