It is difficult to imagine that, on the day india gained independence from the british in 1947, "Mountbatten ji ki jai" was among the many chants honouring Jawaharlal Nehru, mahatma gandhi, and Bharat Mata that were shouted in the streets of Delhi.
In contrast to common belief, we did not expel the British. The term "post-colonial state" was mostly used as a statement of fact, indicating that it emerged chronologically after the coloniser left, rather than to describe an idea, such as a complete break with the past. The state that Nehru assumed leadership of inherited colonial mechanisms that kept creating states of coloniality.
India still has colonial laws, a colonial military, a colonial civil service, and a colonial definition of itself. Colonialism persisted in organisations, concepts, and physical structures.
Nehru's india to Modi's India
The historic edifice, created by two british architects, contrasts sharply with a tech-heavy, glossy parliament drenched in vibrant local aesthetics. When paired with the circular, self-absorbed old edifice, the new Parliament's triangle-shaped dynamism appears defiant. The new parliament also mentions speed, which serves as Modi's project's guiding principle.
Instead than referencing some imagined golden age in the past, Modi refers to India's enormous pre-industrial manufacturing economy. In place of Gandhi's and the extreme right-wing's Hindu utopias, Modi is forging a civilizational "pragmatopia" that is open to dialogue and cooperation with all groups, including the West and its own religious minority. india is redefining itself as a nation, from Nehru's golden walking stick to Modi's holy sceptre.
