The State of kerala recorded over 4.5 lakh vaccinations on saturday making it a single day record. In the past week, the state has administered as many as 16 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccines.  Despite the high vaccination statistics, kerala continues recording high numbers of fresh Covid-19 cases.

The state recorded 18,531 fresh cases on saturday, making the infection count to 32,54,064, with test positivity rate (TPR) falling below 12 per cent. The TPR has crossed 11 per cent on July 19 which was lesser for several weeks earlier and continued to rise upto 13.63 per cent on July 23.

The number of deaths due to the coronavirus rose to 15,969 with more 98 deaths in the last 24 hours. The figures are worrying as the Southern state has continued to report a serious rise in daily cases when compared to the rest of India, consecutively constituting nearly 40% of the country's daily cases in the last few days. On July 18, kerala reported 36.6% of the country's daily cases, 42.2% on July 21 and 44.8 % on July 23.

As of July 24, the state of kerala has highest number of active Covid cases, with 1.3 lakh patients which makes up one-third of total active cases in the country. The consistent high number of Covid cases in the state is similar to maharashtra where the surge was seen before the second wave, sparking concerns for potential of a third wave in Kerala.

The high number of Covid cases is not the only concern of Kerala. Despite its impressive vaccination figures, State health minister George on saturday informed that the state was fast exhausting the stock of vaccines. George said that not everyone can be vaccinated on sunday as only two lakh vaccines left in the stock. The minister stated that if more vaccines are not supplied to kerala by the centre soon, vaccination in kerala will come to a standstill.
