In the lead-up to the 2024 lok sabha elections, AK Antony, a veteran congress leader and member of the congress Working Committee (CWC), revealed that only one member of the gandhi family would contest from either Rae bareli or Amethi constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Antony made this statement during an interview with a television channel on april 11th.
When questioned about the likelihood of a member of the gandhi family contesting from their traditional stronghold, Antony confirmed, "Yes, there will be one." Pressed further if it would be Robert Vadra, he clarified, "Either rahul or Priyanka." Antony also commented on the political landscape, noting the increasing confidence of the indian Bloc and the diminishing confidence of the BJP-led NDA. He pointed to the language used by the Prime Minister, suggesting a shift in narrative.
Though retired from active politics, Antony maintains a presence at the state party headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, visiting daily. He mentioned considering his health before deciding on campaigning for the Congress-led UDF candidates. Notably, Antony's son, Anil Antony, is contesting as a bjp candidate from the pathanamthitta lok sabha constituency.
Regarding the electoral scenario in Rae bareli and Amethi, the congress is yet to announce its candidate for sonia Gandhi's traditional seat in Rae Bareli. Speculation surrounds priyanka Gandhi's potential candidacy there since sonia gandhi became a rajya sabha MP. Meanwhile, rahul gandhi, who faced defeat against BJP's smriti irani in the last election in Amethi, has filed his nomination from wayanad constituency in Kerala. However, there is speculation that he may also contest from Amethi.
Antony's recent statement provides clarity on the situation, indicating the likelihood of a gandhi family member contesting from either Rae bareli or Amethi. The lok sabha elections will commence on april 19th, with results expected on june 4th after polling in seven phases.
