During the growing dispute between india and pakistan after Operation Sindoor, we often heard about the radar that the indian radar detected the Pakistani missile, drone and after that it was shot down. Not only the India-Pakistan tension, but also the war going on between russia and ukraine or the war going on between iran and Israel. You definitely find mention of radar in modern-era warfare. Let us know how radar works and in how much time does it destroy the enemy plane?

How does radar work?

The full form of radar is Radio Detection and Ranging. It detects the position, speed and height of an object with the help of radio waves. Once an enemy plane comes in the range of the radar, its location, speed and direction are immediately captured. It takes 5 to 10 seconds to identify whether that plane is ours or the enemy's. If it turns out to be an enemy plane, the air defense system is given a fire signal, in which the missile is fired keeping in mind the range of the target. For example, if the missile is fired from 50-100 km away, then the plane can be targeted within 20-40 seconds. Depending on the distance, it may take time to destroy the target.

Does the radar detect all planes?

The simple and straightforward answer to this is no. The radar cannot detect all planes. The reason behind this is that, in modern times, planes are being equipped with stealth technology, like America's F-35, they are designed in such a way that the radar cannot detect them and they can do their work easily. Some planes escape the radar by flying at a very low altitude, which is called Nap-of-the-Earth flying.

Which is the world's most powerful radar system?

If we talk about the world's most powerful radar system, then it is Lockheed MartinSPY‑7. It has been developed by America's leading defense company Lockheed Martin. It has the ability to track ballistic missiles, fighter jets, drones, hypersonic weapons and even electronic warfare. Its specialty is that it tracks threats coming from every direction without moving and identifies the target in less than a second.
