Recent reports have suggested that indian Railways is set to implement a stricter luggage policy akin to those at airports, prompting concerns among travelers. According to these reports, passengers may face additional charges for carrying luggage exceeding the specified limits, a move purportedly aimed at boosting station revenues.
However, Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnav has dismissed these claims as entirely false. In a recent interview, he clarified that existing luggage rules have been in place for decades and that the recent rumors misrepresent longstanding regulations as new policies.
As for the allowed luggage, indian Railways permits passengers to carry varying amounts of luggage free of charge, depending on their travel class. For instance, AC First Class passengers can carry up to 70 kg for free, with an additional allowance of 15 kg. AC Second Class and First Class Sleeper passengers are entitled to 50 kg, with a maximum of 100 kg. AC Third Class, Sleeper Class, and Chair car travelers have a free allowance of up to 40 kg, plus an extra 10 kg. General Class passengers can carry up to 35 kg without incurring any charges.
If a passenger exceeds the free luggage limit, they may incur an extra fee, typically up to 1.5 times the ticket price for the excess weight. It’s important to note that this rule is not new; it has been part of the railway regulations for an extended period. While some passengers may receive exemptions in special circumstances, the fundamental luggage policies remain unchanged.
