The smartphone industry is on the verge of a major upheaval with the introduction of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). While the notion of AI in phones is not new, dating back to 2017 when Honour debuted its view 10 in India, smartphone makers are now competing to be the king of the 'AI phone' category. One of the reasons they are looking for strong chipsets to fuel their AI engines and make smartphones'smarter'.

While most AI experiences on phones are enabled by seamless 4G and 5g internet access, Samsung's latest flagships, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24, offer something unique - at least for the time being. This unique feature of the new Galaxy phones has been enabled by AI, courtesy to Google's Gemini.

Here's what google mentioned during the Galaxy S24 launch: "Today, at Galaxy Unpacked in San Jose, we discussed how google AI is enabling new possibilities on Android alongside our long-time partner Samsung. The new samsung Galaxy S24 series will leverage Gemini, Google's best-in-class fundamental models, to enable the next generation of AI capabilities. Furthermore, Galaxy S24 customers now have a whole new method to search their phone, as well as new google Messages and Android auto capabilities.

One of the coolest AI features on the Galaxy S24 Ultra is Live Translation. Essentially, it removes language barriers between two people by providing real-time speech and text translations within the native phone app, and thus does not require an internet connection to function. I tried the tool and was amazed with how rapidly it translated hindi to english (with around 80% accuracy). To use this function, you must first download the language dataset to your smartphone, which is presently limited to 13 languages such as hindi, German, and French.
