Apple Vs Spotify: music Streaming Platform's App Updates Blocked On App Store In EU
Spotify submitted an update of its iOS app to apple in which it removed subscriptions using the App Store’s in-app purchase system. Rather, it directed users to visit Spotify’s website to subscribe.
The european union Commission recently fined apple about 1.8 billion euros (about USD 2 billion) while alleging that the company abuses its dominant position to harm the competitors of apple music on iOS devices. Despite the fine, it appears that apple is not ready to let go of its issues with Spotify. The music streaming platform has now accused apple of blocking its app updates in the EU.
The EU DMA came into effect on march 7, 2024, and since then developers could finally distribute their apps to iOS users outside the App Store. As for the apps available on Apple’s App Store, new rules ensured that the developers could use alternative payment methods for in-app purchases.
Spotify's Accusations Against Apple
On march 5, Spotify submitted an update for its iOS app to apple, which included the removal of subscriptions through the App Store's in-app purchase system. Instead, users are directed to visit Spotify's website for subscription purposes.
However, according to an email from Spotify to the EU Commission, apple has not yet approved this update. The email, viewed by The Verge, read, “It’s been nine days now and we’re still waiting to hear from apple about our app submission to show EU consumers pricing and a link to our website.”
Spotify spokeswoman Jeanne Moran pointed out that Apple's delay contradicts its claim of reviewing app submissions within 24 hours and also goes against the Commission's adoption timeline. apple declined to comment when approached about the issue. While it's common for apple to withhold approval for app updates that don't align with its policies, this situation underscores Apple's stance on Spotify's changes. Despite facing a $2 billion fine, apple appears unmoved regarding Spotify's request. Notably, the EU has mandated that apple cannot prevent developers from informing users about alternative payment methods within their apps.
