Google and Meta's troubles are increasing over the advertisement of illegal online betting apps in India. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a re-summons to both the companies to appear on 28 July 2025. Earlier, representatives of google and Meta had expressed their inability to appear in the last hearing citing lack of legal documents and sought a new date. Now they have been asked to appear in the next hearing with the necessary documents.
Was being used for fake brand promotion
According to sources, ED's investigation has revealed that these platforms are being used for fake brand promotion and advertisements of online betting apps. These apps are not only illegal but are also taking crores of youth across the country on the path of ruin. These betting apps work like drugs and make users addicted.
22 crore people in the country are connected to such apps
The most shocking thing is that about 22 crore people in india are connected to such apps in which 11 crore people participate daily. In the first quarter of 2025, about 1.6 billion visits were recorded on these sites. The online betting market in india has now reached $ 100 billion and about Rs 27,000 crore tax is being saved every year.
In the case, summons have also been sent to many big tollywood actors who have been involved in the brand promotion of these apps. It is clear that these companies, in greed for money, promoted such advertisements, which had a direct impact on the weaker sections of the society.
Becoming the cause of mental illness
Experts say that this type of betting can cause mental illness. The World health Organization (WHO) also considers it a mental disorder. So far, thousands of people in india, including students, housewives and unemployed youth, have committed suicide due to this addiction. According to a PIL filed in Telangana, more than 1,023 suicides have occurred in this state alone due to online betting.
