The hearing of lawsuits challenging the statute that provides for 7.5 percent reservation for government school students in medical studies has been postponed by the chennai High Court. 7.5 percent reservation for government school students in medical education was introduced by the previous AIADMK government. In the chennai High Court, cases have been filed contesting the law and requesting that government-aided private school students be given priority.

The cases came up for hearing again today in a session comprising Chief Justice Munishwarnath Bandari and Justice Bharatha Chakraborty. The then Chief Justice questioned whether the petitioner had expressed concern that the 69 per cent reservation was already in force in tamil Nadu and that the remaining 31 per cent reservation would give 7.5 per cent reservation to government school students, which would affect deserving students in the public sector.

Also, only the families of those who have benefited from the reservation will benefit. The Chief Justice said that the backward classes in the society have been backward for 70 years and the parliament should take note of this.
