Hours before being detained by the Enforcement Directorate in a land fraud case, hemant Soren sent a letter to the Mahagathbandhan's MLAs announcing Champai Soren as the parliamentary party's head. Soren was arrested shortly after his resignation as Chief Minister. Champai Soren, a party supporter and state transport minister, was appointed as his replacement.

Earlier on Wednesday, hemant Soren filed a First Information Report (FIR) against ED officers for searches conducted at his delhi apartment on Monday. In the FIR, Soren claimed that the investigation agency performed the search to "harass and malign him and his entire community."

In a letter to the MLAs of the Opposition india group on Wednesday, hemant Soren stated, "If I am asked to step down from my position as legislative party leader, I will choose the new leader." As the letter was addressed, Soren stated, "I will appear before the Enforcement Directorate for questioning today." "If I am arrested, Champai Soren will become the legislative party's leader."
On Wednesday, Soren submitted his resignation to governor CP Radhakrishnan at the raj Bhavan, and he was later detained in connection with the money laundering investigation. Prior to his detention, Soren stated in a video message, "The ED has arrived to arrest me today. After interviewing me all day, they decided to arrest me in an organised manner on an unrelated subject. They (ED) discovered no proof and even attempted to damage my reputation by conducting searches in Delhi." Soren was questioned for seven hours by the Enforcement Directorate. He also had a medical checkup later in the day.
