At the box office, Disney's live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch has so far had an incredible run. In just nine days, the film achieved the coveted half-billion at the global box office, and in ten days, it reached the $600 million milestone. In addition to giving the studio a break after the poor reception of three consecutive films this year—Snow White, Captain America: Brave New World, and Thunderbolts*—it is set to become the Mouse House's first billion-dollar blockbuster since Moana 2 last year. At the worldwide box office, none of these films were able to surpass the $500 million mark.

However, Lilo & Stitch surpassed a number of animated films, including WALL-E, The Boss Baby, and The Simpsons movie, in reaching the $610 million milestone this weekend.  This past weekend, Lilo & Stitch also outperformed Tangled, which debuted 15 years ago in 2010 with a lifetime global box office total of $592 million.  Inspired by the story of Rapunzel, Tangled, which features the voices of Mandy Moore and Zachari Levi, is still incredibly popular on home video (and as a meme).  But it's also notable for being the priciest animated movie ever made.  According to reports, Tangled cost $260 million, mostly due to its six-year production time.

For comparison, even some of Pixar's most recent productions, including Inside Out 2 and Elemental, only reportedly cost $200 million to make.  With a "certified fresh" 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a strong 87% audience rating based on more than 100,000 ratings, Tangled was well-received by both reviewers and viewers.  In contrast, the Lilo & Stitch remake has a 93% audience rating on the aggregator website and a 70% Rotten Tomatoes score.  Aidan Kelley of Collider called the film "redundant and frustrating" in his review.
