With effect from march 2025, Sir Hamid patel, a seasoned leader in the UK education industry, has been named the temporary chair of the Ofsted Board, also known as the office for Standards in Education. This position, which he will fill for a maximum of five months until a permanent replacement is found, comes after Dame Christine Ryan left after four and a half years. patel is well-known within the organization, having served on the Ofsted Board since 2019.

Patel brings a distinguished background to the position. The multi-academy trust that he leads, Star Academies, is in charge of 36 primary and secondary schools in England, many of which serve underprivileged populations and routinely receive "Outstanding" or top-tier ratings. His achievements in education have earned him a CBE (2015) and a knighthood (2021). Prior to receiving a master's degree in education, he worked as a school inspector and mufti.

But there has been some controversy around his hiring. Right-wing organizations have questioned whether a religious leader can fulfill Ofsted's mandate for inclusive and secular inspection, particularly if the leader has experience with Islamic faith-based education. His hardline Islamic upbringing and prior choices—such as admitting a Saudi imam with alleged antisemitic sentiments to one of his schools—are cited by critics as possible conflicts of interest.
