Following Zohran Mamdani's victory in the Democratic mayoral race for New York City, MAGA fans are posting Photoshopped images of the Statue of Liberty in a burqa. Although the results were not yet final, Mamdani, who would become the first Muslim mayor of the city at the age of 33, had such a strong lead that Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York, his main opponent, quickly conceded defeat.

Islamophobic posts have been made against Mamdani because of his faith; he is a Muslim with Gujarati heritage.  Digitally manipulated images of the Statue of Liberty wearing a black burqa were circulated by several people, including American far-right politician Marjorie Taylor Greene.

MAGA supporter Don Keith was another person who shared the photograph along with a sarcastic "Congratulations, New York".

Social media users also posted images of Zohran Mamdani in kurta pajamas with the tagline "Never Forget"—a reference to the 2001 september 11 attacks on the united states by the Islamic extremist organization al-Qaeda.

Since Mamdani has been outspoken in his criticism of Republican Donald Trump, it is not surprise that MAGA members are hostile. The state assemblyman, who was born in Uganda, has frequently criticized israel and prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu while simultaneously expressing his support for Palestinians.
