Chennai: With the 2026 tamil Nadu Legislative assembly election approaching, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led Secular Progressive Alliance has finalized a seat sharing agreement with one of its smaller partners, the Konnadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK).
Under the latest arrangement, KMDK has been allotted two assembly constituencies where its will contest the polls under the DMK’s “rising sun” election symbol.

Seat Sharing Talks at DMK Headquarters
Negotiations on seat allocation were held at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, where senior leaders from both parties signed the agreement. DMK chief and tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. stalin and KMDK general secretary E.R. Eswaran affixed their signatures to formalize the deal ahead of the assembly polls.
According to reports, the reduction to two seats this year — down from more in previous elections — is part of a broader strategy to accommodate multiple alliance partners within the DMK fold.

Background of the Alliance
KMDK is a regional political party with its base in the western districts of tamil Nadu. It has been a long time ally of the DMK and has previously contested elections on the DMK’s symbol, winning representation in the state assembly.
By allocating two seats to KMDK, the DMK seeks to strengthen its coalition and broaden its appeal across various regions and communities in the state. The alliance strategy aims to consolidate votes from different groups to challenge opposition rivals more effectively.

Wider Alliance Seat Distribution
This latest allocation to KMDK comes as part of a larger seat sharing framework within the DMK coalition. Other allies in the alliance have also been allotted constituencies as leaders balance the interests of multiple parties ahead of the election.

Political Significance
The DMK’s alliance approach, including seats shared with smaller regional parties like KMDK, reflects the complex coalition politics in tamil Nadu. With competition intensifying among major fronts, securing support from allied parties is seen as crucial for electoral success.
