Sunita Shekhawat Elevates Meenakari to Collectible Art
At the jaipur Museum of Meenakari heritage (MOMH), Sunita Shekhawat has launched MOMH Collectibles, an innovative series of eight enamelled objets d'art that expands the traditional realm of Meenakari beyond fine jewellery. Renowned for its exquisite gems, jaipur has a rich legacy in Kundan and Meenakari craftsmanship, yet the preservation of this heritage through museums has been limited.
To address this, Shekhawat inaugurated the self-funded MOMH in 2024, aiming to safeguard Jaipur's enamelling legacy. The museum serves as both an archive and an immersive experience, showcasing original works from her brand and featuring a journey through the history of enamelling, including pieces from prestigious institutions like the Victoria & Albert Museum. Reflecting on MOMH's inaugural year, Shekhawat expressed her goal of creating a space for dialogue between history, craftsmanship, and modern design.
On august 1, MOMH Collectibles debuted, featuring heirloom-quality items such as decorative boxes, spoons, and striking prancing horse earrings. The launch, designed by Eeshaan Kashyap, was a multisensory celebration that engaged guests through touch, scent, sound, and sight. Each collectible was presented in a uniquely themed room, creating a vivid narrative.
The collection highlights ancient enamelling techniques like ronde-bosse and plique-à-jour, meticulously crafted by master artisans. Sunita Shekhawat emphasizes that Meenakari can enrich living spaces as well as adorn the body. Her vision for MOMH Collectibles bridges the gap between jewellery and art, ensuring that Jaipur's craftsmanship continues to evolve as a living heritage for contemporary collectors.
