ECI to Announce SIR on october 27, 2025
The election commission of india (ECI) will hold a press conference on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 4:15 PM to announce a pan-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
The move marks the first nationwide revision drive in years, aimed at ensuring updated and accurate electoral rolls across all states and Union Territories.
🔹 First Phase: Focus on Poll-Bound States
The first phase of the SIR is expected to cover 10 to 15 states, with special attention to those heading for assembly elections in 2026.
These include tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry, all scheduled for polls next year.
The ec will avoid states currently engaged in local body elections, allowing their administrative machinery to focus fully on the SIR at a later stage.
🔹 Bihar’s Example and Current Status
Bihar recently completed its voter list update, publishing the final electoral roll with 7.42 crore names as of september 30, 2025.
The state will hold its assembly polls in two phases — on november 6 and 11, with counting on November 14.
🔹 Preparation and Coordination
The ec has already conducted two national conferences with State Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) to finalize the SIR rollout plan.
Many states have uploaded their previous SIR voter lists on official election websites.
Notably, Delhi’s last intensive revision took place in 2008, while Uttarakhand’s was in 2006.
Most other states carried out their last SIR exercises between 2002 and 2004.
🔹 Objective: Clean and Verified Electoral Rolls
The primary aim of the Special Intensive Revision is to verify voters’ places of birth and identify foreign illegal migrants on the rolls.
The initiative aligns with ongoing nationwide crackdowns on illegal migrants, particularly from bangladesh and Myanmar, and seeks to ensure clean, verified, and authentic voter databases across India.
