Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin has strongly questioned the failure of the ‘double-engine government’ to protect the people of Manipur, referring to the governments led by the same party at both the Centre and the state. He raised this question while speaking at a public event, sharply criticizing the handling of the prolonged violence and unrest in Manipur.

Concern Over Manipur Violence

In his remarks, the chief minister expressed deep concern over the loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of thousands of people due to the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. He stated that it was the constitutional responsibility of both the Union and State governments to ensure the safety and security of citizens, which, according to him, had not been fulfilled.

Criticism of the “Double-Engine Government”

M.K. stalin questioned the credibility of the concept of a “double-engine government,” a term often used to suggest better coordination between the Centre and state governments ruled by the same party.

“If a double-engine government truly works for the welfare of the people, why was it unable to prevent violence or protect innocent citizens in Manipur?” he asked.

He added that despite having power at both levels, the authorities failed to restore peace, prevent human rights violations, and provide timely relief to affected communities.

Call for Accountability and Justice

The chief minister demanded accountability from the Union government, urging it to take moral and administrative responsibility for the situation. He stressed the need for immediate action to restore peace, rehabilitate displaced families, and ensure justice for victims.

He also emphasized that silence or delayed responses during humanitarian crises weaken democracy and erode public trust in governance.

Message on Federal Responsibility

M.K. stalin reiterated that India’s federal structure requires both the Centre and the states to act responsibly, especially during crises. He stated that political slogans cannot replace effective governance, and the true measure of a government lies in its ability to protect its people during difficult times.

Conclusion

Concluding his speech, the chief minister said that the situation in Manipur should serve as a serious reminder that governance must prioritize human lives over political narratives. He urged the authorities to act decisively to ensure peace, harmony, and justice for the people of Manipur.
