Initiative to Improve Water Flow and Irrigation
Chennai: tamil Nadu minister for Water Resources, Duraimurugan, today launched special desilting and maintenance works in rivers, canals, lakes, and drainage channels across 24 districts of tamil Nadu. The initiative was inaugurated through a video conference from Chennai, marking the beginning of large-scale efforts to strengthen water management in the state.
Focus on Delta and Key Regional Districts
The project covers 13 delta districts along with districts in the madurai and coimbatore regions, where several important irrigation systems support agriculture. The desilting works aim to remove accumulated silt, debris, and vegetation from rivers, canals, irrigation channels, lakes, and drainage systems to ensure smooth water flow.

Strengthening Water Resource Management
According to the Water Resources Department, the special works are being carried out as part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to maintain irrigation infrastructure and improve groundwater recharge. Clearing the waterways will also help store more rainwater during the monsoon season and support farmers during agricultural cycles.
minister Duraimurugan emphasized that regular maintenance of water bodies is essential for sustainable water management and agricultural productivity in tamil Nadu.
Officials and Engineers Participate Virtually
Senior officials from the Water Resources Department, engineers, and district authorities from the concerned districts participated in the launch event through the video conference. They reviewed the implementation plan and discussed the timeline for completing the desilting works.
The initiative is expected to benefit thousands of farmers by ensuring better irrigation facilities and improved water storage capacity across the participating districts.
