This word strikes fear and revulsion into the hearts of confirmed couch potatoes, bit shouldn’t. Even true experts tend to define exercise in terms of their preferred sport, activity or school of thought. Hucksters and fad promoters define in terms of whatever they are trying to sell you, from workout videos to exercise machines that defy parody to expensive memberships at health clubs based on the TV Commercials.

Yoga is both an ancient religious practice and a contemporary fad. Traditionally it is the practice of assuming various postures to assist in meditation and it is common to Hinduism and other Eastern religions. In America and much of Western culture, yoga is presented merely as a form of an exercise, something for health clubs to add to their menu of extra cost activities.

Moreover the majority of people who rely on yoga classes don’t develop an adequate level of cardiovascular conditioning. This should be obvious, considering that health club yoga classes consist mainly of standing, sitting, lying and stretching, three of which are the chief activities of committed couch potatoes.

Take stairs instead of elevators or escalators. If you work on the tenth floor, take the elevator to the eighth floor. Carry your luggage instead of using rollers. Take dancing lessons and many have reduced their weight after they have joined a dance class.
