Over 1 lakh children orphaned due to Covid?


According to a report released by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), since april 1, 2020, around 1.47 lakh children have lost their parents due to Covid-19. The commission told the supreme court, based on data uploaded by states and union territories, that 10,094 orphans need care and protection. After january 11, had a total of 1,36,910 children lost their parents, 488 were abandoned, leaving a total of 1,47,492 children in need of support.

The commission said that among these children, there are 76,508 boys, 70,980 girls, and four transgenders. The maximum number of children (59,010) are between eight and 13 years, followed by 22,763 children in the age group of 14 to 15, 22,626 in the age group of 16 to 18, and 26,080 in the age group of four to seven years.


In the backdrop of the pandemic, the supreme court on monday directed all district Magistrates (DMs) to collaborate with district Legal services Authority and voluntary organizations to rehabilitate children in street situations. A bench of Justices L nageswara rao and BV Nagarathna said that immediate steps are required to be taken by the central government and the State Governments to provide shelter to the children in road conditions. The bench emphasized that the children should be shifted to shelter homes and also directed the DMs to upload the information at all stages on the web portal of NCPCR.

The bench further said that the State Governments and Union Territories (UTs) should engage with the concerned authorities for the identification and rehabilitation of children without any further delay.
