Despite being promoted as an exciting action drama, Decibel actually investigates how loss and trauma affect survivors' decisions underneath the genre's surface veneer. The movie is directed by Hwang In-ho, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Lee Jin-hoon. It comes after other Korean thrillers like Decision to Leave and Project Wolf Hunting that have experimented with conventional narrative structures. The newest film in the nation's filmography may not be as experimental as its forerunners, but its impressive cast makes it stand out from the competition. Although Decibel features loud explosions and a frantic race against time, Lee Jong-suk & Cha Eun-woo's touching scenes are its true strength.

The narrative centres on retired Navy commander Kang Do-young (Kim Rae-won), who left his job after a tragedy that left a sizable portion of his crew dead. But on the day of the tragic incident's anniversary, he gets a strange call (from Jong-suk, who stays unnoticed for the majority of the action) alerting him that a bomb has been set nearby. He is compelled to handle the approaching threat and the hidden terrorist on his own because he is afraid to contact authorities for fear of retaliation. The unique feature of the bomb—which gives it its name—is that it is set off by sound, and any noise that exceeds a particular volume will halve the timer. Do-task young's becomes even more critical as a result of this caveat as additional bombs are planted in parks for kids, public swimming pools, and even football stadiums.

Decibel's action scenes can drag on since director Hwang took a long gap after filming 2014's Monster, which starred Kim Go-eun and Lee Min-ki, and this may be due to rust. Although they are technically excellent and heighten suspense as the story goes on, they don't have the same emotional impact as the flashback sequences, which are the main plot point. The tragedy that occurs before the current events is intertwined with the mystery of the terrorist's identity, as is Do-young's murky role in the incident.

The movie begins in the past with Jeon Tae-ryong, the youngest member of Do-submarine young's crew (Eun-woo, making his feature debut), poking fun of how immature his commander behaved in comparison to him. This results in a touching series of bonding between the Navy officers that alludes to the losses the reticent hero has suffered. The flashbacks reveal the intricate details of the submarine catastrophe at the centre of the narrative as Decibel races towards its inevitable confrontation and resolution, endangering Do-family young's members in the process. Even though the relationship between Eun-woo and Jong-characters suk's is not developed as much as it may have been, their few interactions produce a tragic past and a warped justification for his crazed decisions in the present.
