While on vacation, james Foster (Skarsgrd) and his wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are staying at a resort on the made-up island of La Tolqa. james, a writer who hasn't written in six years, is having trouble getting inspired when travelling. When james meets Gabi (Pearl and X star Mia Goth), a self-described fan of his novel, and her husband Alban, everything changes. James' marriage to Em, a publishing heiress who provides for james financially, is not exactly happy (Jalil Lespert). Even though they are not permitted past the resort's wired gates, the couple invites james and Em to spend the night with them outdoors.

It's all about style over substance at Infinity Pool. No other project seems to have much interest for Cronenberg. Certainly, the feelings are there, and one can sympathise with the warped people, especially as things become more more twisted as the movie progresses. But the plot also has a hollow quality to it. The movie raises interesting issues, like morality and riches, as well as what it means when death and consequences are no longer a barrier, but it falls flat and has a narrow focus. Although the purpose is evident, the execution falls short.

Cronenberg, however, is only marginally interested in completely examining James. The majority of the characters are underwritten and underused. Skarsgrd and Goth, though, give their all to the roles they play. They are engrossing and eager to embrace the bizarre and unexpected. They put on exciting performances. Skarsgrd plays a failed writer who doubts his abilities without trying to be endearing, and he does so convincingly. Goth, on the other hand, keeps demonstrating her ability to seamlessly transition between the two. She is captivating to watch.

The focus of the movie is more on the bodily horror and excess of it all; it doesn't even take the time to describe the imaginary island that serves as the setting for the plot, giving ample room for the characters' free will. In other areas, the movie takes no prisoners. There is gore, the violence has an unsettling air of glee that makes watching Infinity Pool even more unsettling, and there is tremendous body horror. It like riding a roller coaster that strays from the track.

Infinity Pool has a special pleasure to it since spectators will be anticipating what bizarre, bizarre event will occur next. In spite of its shortcomings elsewhere, the movie is successful in that aspect. Unfortunately, the plot is disjointed, and this affects how it is carried out. However, it embraces its eccentricity, and if viewers are ready to go along for the journey, it could end up being quite interesting.
