Love and Death is based on the true account of texas housewife Candy Montgomery, who in 1980 used an axe to murder Betty Gore, a friend from church. Allan Gore and Betty Gore are played by Jesse Plemons and Lily Rabe, respectively, with Candy Montgomery, Betty's killer, played by Elizabeth Olsen. Actor Patrick Fugit will also appear in the series as Candy Montgomery's husband, Pat Montgomery. A voice-over in the trailer describes Candy Montgomery's routine life, while a fast-moving montage shows the pivotal events in Montgomery's life.

In reality, detectives focused on Candy since Betty had found out about her affair with Allan when she was discovered in her texas house in 1980, having been "hit by an axe 41 times." In the well-known trial, Candy testified that Betty "swung at her with an axe," and Candy killed her out of self-defense. In the end, Candy was declared not responsible.
