Music legend AR rahman caused a stir by requesting that his wife speaks at an awards event in tamil rather than Hindi. There are conflicting opinions on the same video that has been making the rounds on social media.

According to reports, as rahman and his wife saira bhanu entered the stage, the show's host asked saira bhanu to briefly discuss Rahman's accomplishments. Quickly, rahman requested that she talk in tamil rather than Hindi. The footage, however, makes it appear as though rahman was making fun of his wife's poor Tamil.

Later, when saira bhanu takes the microphone, she apologizes to the audience for her poor command of Tamil. Leading national media outlets said that rahman had his wife saira bhanu speak tamil under duress and further stated that the music director despises Hindi.

When the video was fact-checked, it was evident that rahman was joking when he said, "Yes, it was an award I won for a tamil movie at the tamil film awards." There is nothing wrong with it at all, and it is obviously propaganda meant to defame the music creator. rahman avoids controversy, and he typically doesn't reply to any criticism or unfavorable remarks made about him.
