Laura Dern, who plays Dr. Ellie Sattler in Jurassic Park, feels the wide age gap between her character and Dr. Alan Grant was inappropriate. Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1993, was an instant smash with viewers eager to see dinosaurs come to life on the big screen like never before. The film follows palaeontologists Ellie and Alan (Sam Neill) as they explore a cutting-edge dinosaur theme park, which swiftly devolves into a terrifying survival fight when some of the dinosaurs escape their confines.

Dern would not appear in the film's immediate sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, in 1997, but he did appear in Jurassic Park III in a minor part. Ellie and Alan were in a romantic relationship in the first film, but they couldn't decide whether or not to have children. Ellie and Alan were no longer together by the divisive Jurassic Park III, and Ellie was married with children, yet the two characters remained close. Dern will appear with original Jurassic Park co-stars Neill and Jeff Goldblum in the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion, which is set to hit theatres later this summer.

Dern discusses her role in the original Jurassic Park in a recent interview with The New York Times, focusing on the enormous age gap between her and Neill. Neill was 20 years older than Dern when Jurassic Park was shot, and Dern pointed out the significant age difference after Neill said, "I am 20 years older than Laura!"
