After the events of the Infinity Saga, the doctor Strange sequel continues the eponymous character's personal story in the MCU. doctor Strange 2 is also a sequel to WandaVision, since it continues the story of Wanda, now known as the Scarlet Witch, following the Maximoff Anomaly in Westview.

Wanda and doctor Strange are two of the most well-known MCU magicians. They are also expected to play a key part in the world heading forward as the franchise transitions following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Both characters were present at Tony Stark's funeral and participated in the last battle against Thanos in Endgame, but doctor Strange 2 marks their first on-screen contact. However, this was not the original plan.

This was shown in a behind-the-scenes shot of the two superheroes working together to use magic. It's unclear what was going on at the time, but a connection between Wanda and doctor Strange would have been made if directors Joe and Anthony Russo hadn't deleted it from the film. Because they have a history together, this would have added to the emotional impact of their reunion followed by their deadly battle in doctor Strange 2.
