Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde said on sunday that prime minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the country's longest sea bridge 'Mumbai Trans Harbor Link' (MTHL) on january 12. The chief minister said that after the inauguration of the 21.8 km long bridge between Sewri in mumbai and Nhava Sheva area of Raigarh district, the journey will take only 15-20 hours which currently takes two hours.

Shinde told reporters, “Prime minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate MTHL on january 12. This bridge will enable economic development in the areas connected to it. According to officials, MTHL will be connected to the main Mumbai-Pune Expressway which connects the two largest cities of the state. The 16.5 kilometer long portion of this six-lane bridge is over the sea, while the 5.5 kilometer portion is on land.

mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL) will have six lanes. It will be 21.8 km long. This bridge is the longest sea bridge in India. The Navi mumbai end of the bridge will have interchanges on National Highway 4B at Sewri, shivaji Nagar, Jassi and Chirle. It will also connect to the main mumbai Pune Expressway, which connects the two largest cities of the state. The construction of the bridge started in 2018. Although it was expected to open to the public in 4.5 years, the project was delayed by eight months due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Earlier this bridge was to be inaugurated on december 25, but it missed the deadline. Notably, the bridge has passed the load carrying capacity tests conducted over the past fortnight and is ready to be opened for vehicular traffic.
