US President donald trump earlier claimed that india has offered to remove all tariffs on American goods, but he backtracked from this claim and said that despite the apparent success, he is in no hurry to formalize the trade deal. Reacting to Donald Trump's claim that india said that the ongoing talks are complex and far from finalized.

In an interview to Fox news on friday (May 16, 2025), donald trump said that india is the top example of a country where there are barriers, which he is determined to eliminate. He said, "They make it almost impossible to do business. Do you know that they are willing to cut their tariffs 100% for the United States?"

'There is no hurry to finalise the deal'

But trump also gave mixed signals on how close a deal could be, saying, "It will happen soon. I am in no hurry. Look, everyone wants to deal with us." He said he is not planning to strike a deal with everyone. Earlier, trump had said he plans to set new import duty rates for trading partners in the next two to three weeks.

What did india say?

Speaking to reporters, External Affairs minister S jaishankar said, "Trade talks are going on between india and the US. These are complex talks. Nothing is finalised until everything is finalised. Any trade deal should be mutually beneficial; it should work for both countries. That is what we would expect from a trade deal. Until that happens, any decision on it would be premature."
