The supreme court, while hearing a criminal contempt petition filed against West bengal chief minister mamata banerjee, on monday (July 21, 2025), cautioned that judicial proceedings should not be politicized. The petition said that cm mamata banerjee made objectionable statements after the supreme court decided to cancel teacher recruitment.

A bench of Chief Justice bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai (CJI BR Gavai) and Justice K Vinod Chandran, while hearing a petition filed against mamata banerjee over her remarks on the court's decision in the teacher recruitment scam case, said, 'Please fight your political battle outside this court.'

The bench made this remark while hearing a petition filed by a public charitable trust named Atmadeep. The petition alleged that chief minister mamata banerjee made objectionable statements after the supreme Court's decision, which undermine the authority of the judiciary.

Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the petitioner, urged the bench to adjourn the hearing, saying that a request was sent to the Attorney General for his consent to initiate criminal contempt proceedings.

Chief Justice bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai said, 'Are you so sure that you will get consent? Don't try to politicize before the court; you should fight your political battle elsewhere.'

The bench adjourned the hearing of the case for four weeks. This petition is related to the decision given in april this year, in which the supreme court upheld the order of the calcutta High court in which about 25,000 appointments made by the West bengal school service Commission in 2016 were declared invalid. chief minister mamata banerjee had allegedly made some critical comments on this decision.
