Union minister Suresh Gopi Responds to Criticism Over Refusing Elderly Man’s Request
Union minister Suresh Gopi came under fire after a video went viral showing him refusing to accept a housing request from an elderly man, Velayudhan, during a public event in Thrissur, Kerala, on september 12.
Gopi’s public refusal to take the application triggered widespread criticism on social media, with many questioning his sensitivity as a public representative.
In response, the minister issued a clarification on Facebook, stating that he does not believe in making false promises or offering hope where delivery is uncertain.
He emphasized that housing construction is a state subject, not under his direct control as a Union Minister. He said the state government is responsible for such schemes and approvals.
Gopi maintained that he is always clear with the public about what he can or cannot do within the limits of his role and jurisdiction.
“It is not my job to give false hopes,” he wrote, stressing that he aims to help people within the system and without misleading them.
He also accused certain individuals of running a political agenda by exploiting the incident for personal or party gains.
In a positive turn of events, Gopi acknowledged that another political party stepped in and provided a house to the elderly man’s family.
“Even if it was done for political gain, the family got the house — and that’s what really matters,” Gopi added.
The minister concluded that if his actions indirectly helped someone, it should be seen as a constructive outcome, highlighting the importance of real solutions over empty gestures.
The incident reflects the growing scrutiny on public representatives and the delicate balance between empathy and accountability in politics.
