In the second Test between both the two countries, at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, bangladesh players unwittingly assisted New Zealand's Will Young in scoring seven runs in one ball. Young was given a lifeline as his catch was lost, and afterwards, a mix-up between the bangladesh fielders allowed the batter to score seven runs in a single ball.

On Day 1, after lunch, the event occurred on the last ball of the first over. Young was given a healthy edge by bowler Ebadot Hossain, and the ball was on its way to first slip. Nevertheless, the outfielder at second slip dived full-length to collect the ball, only to miss it, and the ball was diverted to the fine leg fence. As the ball raced towards the boundary, new zealand batter tom Latham and Young each scored three runs. The fielder there grabbed it up and tossed it towards wicketkeeper Nurul Hassan, who attempted a run-out by throwing the ball towards the non-strikers end, but it sailed past a couple of fielders, resulting in a boundary at the other end.

The home team got off to a great start earlier on Sunday, scoring 92 runs in the morning session. bangladesh, who are presently leading the series 1-0, won the toss and chose to bat first. The Kiwis had built a score of 349/1 at stumps on Day 1, thanks to skipper tom Latham's unbeaten 186 from 278 deliveries.
