The world cup 2023 match between pakistan and south africa at the MA chidambaram Stadium in chennai on friday brought the cricket legislation known as the "umpire's call" into sharp relief once more. First, with DRS displaying two "umpire's call" out of three, south africa was the team on the receiving end when Rassie van der Dussen was given out by the third umpire.

Then, the on-field umpire's not-out call saved Tabraiz Shamsi from an extremely tight LBW claim, causing sorrow for Pakistan. This led former off-spinner for India, Harbhajan Singh, to criticise the 'umpire's call' regulations harshly. Harbhajan said that poor umpiring caused pakistan to lose the game by one run and suggested that the ICC alter the "umpire's call" rule.

"Bad umpiring and bad rules cost pakistan this game.. @ICC should change this rule .. if the ball is hitting the stump that’s out whether umpire gave out or not out doesn’t matter.. otherwise what is the use of technology???" Following a thrilling victory for south africa thanks to a boundary struck by Keshav Maharaj, Harbhajan tweeted. As a result, pakistan dropped to sixth place in the leaderboard while south africa shot to the top of the net run rate rankings.
