In the era of pollution of the land by the plastic and quest of recycling the plastic which is harmful to the living organisms, two scientists came up with a brilliant idea that could make a huge change in dumping plastic. Two scientists have received the $1.18 million 2021 Future Insight prize for their concept of a food 'generator' that converts plastic into protein.

The research was initially financed by a $7.2 million cooperative contract award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA over 4 years. Using a mix of chemicals and extreme temperatures, the objective was to develop a method for turning plastic waste into protein powder as well as lubricants (pyrolysis).

A prize has been given to scientists at the university of St. Louis for their efforts in creating meals from plastic and non-edible plant waste. The concept is built on a mechanism in which individuals dump plastic waste in a slot, which is then broken down using heat. The waste is then placed in a tank containing a bacterial population that consumes it. The resultant meals "contain all of the necessary nutrition, are nontoxic, and give health advantages," according to the researchers.

The revolutionary method has the ability to deliver a healthy and sustainable food supply while reducing the environmental damage caused by plastic waste and standard farming techniques.
