Telangana election Results:Congress a Big Step Forward...

The telangana assembly elections are underway, and more than two hours into the counting process, the congress is holding onto its lead of 70 seats while overtaking the ruling BRS with its gains of 37 seats. With leads in 8 and 3 seats, respectively, the bjp and AIMIM are lagging. In the high-stakes polls held in the southern state last month, "founding father" K chandrasekhar Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi is depending on its social welfare programmes to hold into its advantage, while the congress is hoping to repeat its election victory in neighboring Karnataka. On the other hand, the bjp seeks to consolidate its hold on the state in order to expand its influence in southern India.

The parties will have to win the required 60 seats in the 119-member telangana assembly in order to form a government. In a seat-sharing deal, the bjp and Jana Sena campaigned on 111 and 8 seats, respectively, while the congress gave one seat to its ally, the CPI. With predictions of over 60 seats won, the congress leading the field, the BRS in second place with over 40 seats won, and the bjp in last place with only 7 seats gained, most exit polls have given the congress the advantage.

In telangana, where ballots for the 119 assembly seats are being counted today, the congress has gained significant ground. Based on preliminary trends in the telangana assembly elections, the congress has a 70-seat majority.
