New Delhi: The Government of India has announced that a total of 4.93 crore smart meters have been installed across the country, with 1.6 crore operating in prepaid mode under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). This information was shared in Parliament on Thursday, highlighting the government’s efforts to enhance power distribution efficiency and transparency.

The move to smart meters is part of a broader strategy to modernize the electricity sector, reduce power losses, and empower consumers with better control over their energy usage. Prepaid smart meters allow users to monitor consumption in real-time, avoid unexpected bills, and promote energy conservation.

The RDSS scheme aims to support state electricity distribution companies in upgrading infrastructure, deploying advanced metering systems, and improving overall service reliability. Officials noted that the continued rollout of smart meters is a significant step toward digitalizing India’s power sector and fostering sustainable energy management.
