Before every match begins, umpires will have a specific equipment called the bat gauge available for all batters to use for a bat inspection, according to Arun Dhumal, the IPL governor and secretary of the BCCI.
Players shimron hetmyer and Phil salt were taken by surprise when they were requested to have their bats scrutinized during a recent match between the rajasthan Royals and royal challengers Bengaluru. They received permission to continue playing after passing the bat gauge test. Given the astounding number of 200-plus scores that have been amassed in the tournament thus far, this new regulation seeks to maintain the integrity of the game and encourage fair play.
"No one ought to believe that someone has an unfair edge. To ensure that the game remains fair, the bcci and IPL have consistently taken all necessary steps in this regard. To ensure that all judgments can be reviewed and that the games are not adversely impacted, we have made the most of technology. Dhumal said, The indian Express, "The goal of this initiative is to make sure that the spirit of the game is maintained."
What the rules say
According to the game's regulations, the bat's dimensions are tightly controlled. The bat's breadth cannot be greater than 4.25 inches (10.8 cm), its depth cannot be greater than 2.64 inches (6.7 cm), and its edges cannot be wider than 1.56 inches (4.0 cm). The bat's handle shouldn't account for more than 52% of its overall length. The maximum thickness for covering materials is 0.04 inches (0.1 cm), and the maximum thickness for any toe protection is 0.12 inches (0.3 cm). To guarantee conformity, the bat must also glide past the official bat gauge.
According to the rules, the fourth umpire will examine the bats of the two opening batsmen before they take the field, and the two on-field officials will examine the bats of every other hitter. Bat checks used to be done the day before the game, but a flaw was found when several players showed up the next day with different bats.
Since the lower portion of the bat is where hitters attempt to make contact with the ball, they bulk up that area. "Strokes have more power when there is more wood around the 'sweet spot' and less wood near the handle," an international batter with experience with bigger bats told Express.
Frequent inspections carried out in compliance with IPL rules do not carry immediate fines; nonetheless, noncompliance requires the player to switch bats. However, infractions might have major consequences. For example, in the 2023 english County Championship, Essex lost 12 points because Feroze Khushi used an oversized bat, which affected their standings.
